Spend any time online researching Quy Nhơn in English, and you''re bound to come across mentions of Barbara''s. In the mid-2000s, the hostel, run by a New Zealander who lived in the city, offered decent low-budget accommodation geared towards foreigners. But today, it''s locally-run, dirty, and uncomfortable. However, with so little information available in English about the city, the reports from the poorly-researched travel guides of the past and the hostel''s own long-ago marketing still float to the top of internet searches—ahead of the uniformly harsh reviews from more recent times—and give the false impression that the hostel is the best and only option in Quy Nhơn. The modern-day reality is that as of 2016, the hostel offers one bug-infested dorm room of precariously-assembled bunkbeds, with a gaping hole in the wall hastily boarded over by wood. An adjacent private room is dank and similarly decrepit. A small cafe and "tourist centre" in the front of the hostel sells overpriced scam-tours and standard backpacker meals such as banana pancakes. Bottom line: there are dozens of hotels in the city which offer better value than Barbara''s.
